Matt Bowen promoted to 'Kohai'
At a recent meeting of all the black belts of the UTA it was agreed that Matt Bowen should be promoted to 'Kohai'. About this honour, Sensei Phil Benge said; “In simple terms this means that Matt will become my apprentice. He will be pushed both physically and mentally to gain as much knowledge as possible. Being Kohai means he will take on certain tasks within the club looking after the low kyu grades, ensuring that beginners are looked after. This title was given to me by my Sensei/Sempai when I was a 2nd kyu and is a great honour. For clubs to grow and develop we need to look to the future and students like Matt are the future of our Aikido legacy”. Sensei Phil & Sensei Al attend BAB National CourseSensei Phil & Sensei Al attended the recent BAB National Course in Bisham Abbey. With around 90 Aikidoka's on the tatami from all over the UK representing various Aikido Associations within the BAB, the training was varied and interesting. Sensei Al was made up when he met his first Aikido teacher, Chad, and Chad was equally happy to see Al wearing his black belt. It was nice to meet so many like minded people who are interested in training and improving their Aikido. Sensei Phil, Mike, Chris & Matt visit Sensei Roger Payne 6th DanSensei's Phil, Mike, Chris & Kohai Matt were invited by Sensei Roger Payne 6th Dan to train at the MSMAS dojo. We were made to feel very welcome and the training was excellent. Sensei Roger is the Official UK Representative (Daihyo), of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. As the came to an end we were all presented with some genuine Japanese chopsticks and a 'Hatchimaki' (Japanese bandana). The hatchimaki represents hard work & perserverance. We are hoping to invite Sensei Payne to hold a course at our dojo in the New Year. Sensei Pierre Citti 7th Dan Course
'Inspirational', 'Awesome', 'An excellent weekends training', 'Great to train with so many different aikidokas', and 'Truly wonderful weekend' These are just some of the comments on the recent Sensei Citti course. With over 35 aikidoka's on the tatami each day travelling from as far away as Sheffield, Bedford, Reading, Southampton, Swindon, Torbay & Exeter, the course was a great success. Sensei Citti was accompanied with Sensei Hauzer, Sensei Maria & Sensei Natalie. It was good to see all the Sensei's from Belgium and train with them. Sensei Pierre & group are returning to the UK in late November to train in Reading. Numbers are limited, so if you are interested please let me know. Saturday June 2nd 2007Aikido course with Sensei Vince Thompson 8th Dan
The course was a great success with almost 30 Aikidoka's on the mat. There was a number of hi-lights. For Al it was being awarded his Shodan by Sensei Vince, for me it was seeing the surprised look on Sensei Al's face. Everyone on the matt enjoyed the day and the relaxed way Sensei Vince teaches, however, what I feel most of the students enjoyed was seeing Sensei Vince throw Sensei Phil around. Keep an eye on this site for pictures and video of the day. Thursday 24th May 2007Sensei Phil Benge awarded Community Champion award for his work within the community promoting Aikido
